Larian Studios Reveal a Latest Divinity, Calling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet

The speculation around The Game Awards has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is creating a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

A Different Direction

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This distinction implies that the team is likely designing a real-time experience instead of another turn-based title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it kicked off the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, branching plots, and flexible progression—qualities that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities that are viable by choosing a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully flexible, letting players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be solved in a variety of manners, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can anticipate more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
