| rsouthard Anon 2010-Aug-11 9:18 pm Charter's Stupidity.Thought I would share my conversation with charter support tonight. I was thinking about switching to charter HSI.Ryan Southard: You see my angle here? I am seriously considering changing my service to you, but i want to make sure i am getting what i pay for. DAC Stephen : ok. Southard: and you are telling me, i buy the 25mb package, but you wont guarantee i get that speed, i may get 10mb down average and i cannot get a credit on my bill or anything? DAC Stephen : yes, that is right. Southard: No wonder no one use your services. DAC Stephen: Sucks doesnt it! |

| msmisfit Member 2010-Aug-11 9:56 pm Sounds to me like he was being honest, but Charter won't be happy with that last comment from Stephen. None of us are guaranteed the maximum on any tier, but some customers on the higher tiers get more ... some less. There is no way they can guarantee you, that you will always get the maximum. Why not try it, and see what you can get at your location? If you're not pleased you can cancel. |

Yeah, I would give it a try, Charter's service seems to differ area to area. ...and Charter has some sort of policy saying if you don't get X percentage of your advertised speed, they'll send out a tech. So if you ARE getting 10mb on a 25mb connection, they'll send out a tech. If you're getting 22 megs on a 25 connection, I doubt they'll send out tech unless you throw a tantrum. And about getting a credit, I think it depends on the rep you speak with, and again, how much of a pain in the behind you are. |

Do any cable service providers gurantee a speed? I didn't think they did or at least they don't in my area, all the packages are "up too". That said, I am on charters 25/3 package. I have had some ups and downs early on. But they did come through, fix my issue and back credited me many months of service with help from charter direct once the problem I was having was found to be an area issue. Since then I have had zero problems, zero downtime, zero slowness. I have also tried a docsis 3.0 modem so they'd stop harrassing me on that front and my speeds have actually increased, I now test and download steady @ 40/5. Powerboost doesn't seem to be on anymore though.... |

Anon 2010-Aug-14 9:09 am to rsouthardLol I contacted charter and they said it might be "because a lot of people are online at the same time." I thought that was a rumor and parallel connections didn't affect speeds? Wasn't that their mkt strategy to lure people from DSL? |

Too many people have a PC with Windows XP installed and continue to patch it over and over. You would be surprised what happens if you reinstall Windows. Your speed will likely increase. Even better quit using IE as that is slow as it comes. |

Wasn't that their mkt strategy to lure people from DSL? Not that I know of. That sounds more like a teleco claim of their merit over cable... which is affected by your neighbors' traffic, if your location is oversold vs the equipment. Those problems get taken care of after continual complaints. |

Member 2010-Aug-15 9:45 pm to rsouthardIn my experience, the most important thing is the connection quality, not the speed. If you aren't getting the full advertised speed, my guess is you have a bad connection anyway. I'd rather have a stable, crisp 3 meg connection guaranteed than a shoddy unstable 25 meg connection any day. |

I would never run XP without service pack 3, and I never have speed issues that you can blame XP on. Fact is I have always been able to peak out my connection on every XP install I have ever touched. from initial release, to SP3. |

I pay $39.99 for my Internet access. That is what I was paying 10 years ago for 1.5 Mbps DSL. It is what I was paying two years ago for 5 Mbps Cable. And now I'm now getting 18-22 Mbps sustained downloads... Still for the SAME price. I'm certainly happy with the product. If you can't get 25 Mbps, then don't pay for 25 Mbps. Many people in the world can only dream of having that plan even offered to them. |

he should have pointed out the 30 day money back guarantee if you are not satisfied with the speed. Having previously worked support before, I am guessing you were being pretty snooty, and he knew it was no point because you just wanted to complain. What you do not understand is that guaranteed speed is a CIRCUIT, I also worked with those, for business customers.... they cost a LOT more than residential service. if you are in a docsis 2 area, your port (usually node) is sharing a 42 megabit theoretical connection, 38 mb after overhead. ALL residential service is shared, it ALL has a choke point, because dedicated bandwidth is OUTRAGEOUS for home use. Just because you USE the internet, does not mean you know how it runs, you say charter 'stupidity' but its how the entire INDUSTRY is.... |

Only because i use open wifi connections for free. With permission. I don't bother checking speeds, if it lags it lags. This is so much better than caring or having to call charters inept support. Charter is a horrid corp. stay away! And that rep seemed pretty cool in comparison to others! |

If you want guaranteed speeds, you can buy a dedicated line for ~$300/mbit from most any ISP plus any install costs which will be in the thousands to tens of thousands You're 25mbit will cost about $25k/month, so you mind as well get an OC3(155mbit), but then you have to pay about $10k+ to install you'll get your rated speed though |
